Naver Became First Korean Portal to Introduce Desktop Search Service

- Launched ¡°My PC Search¡± tailored to the characteristics of Korean users.
- Linked with Naver Search, the service shows search results on internet as well as user¡¯s PC
- Enabled users to enjoy the search service with convenience and safety thanks to increased functions and enhanced security

NHN Corp.¡¯s search engine Naver became the first Korean portal to enter the desktop search market with the launch of its ¡°My PC Search¡± service.

My PC Search enables users to search information from their hard disc, like they can do using Naver Search on the internet. The service helps to find formatted documents such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Text, PDF files, and mails, pictures, video clips and sites they recently visit.

In addition, as the desktop search is linked with Naver Search, users find results not only from their PCs but from Naver without bothering to open additional program.

My PC Search service offers multiple functions reflecting search patterns of Korean users and maximizing conveniences. The desktop search service allows users to: view documents, folders, music and video clip files and screen shots that users recently visited; check files in a folder without opening the file; show previews before searching image file and information of pictures taken by digital cameras; search index quickly; and make users enjoy the service without overload of computer system.

In particular, the issue of security, which has considered the most vulnerable part of desktop search, has dramatically improved. By creating their own passwords, users can lock the service to prevent others from searching their information. The service also blocks any leakage of personal information and infringement of privacy by allowing users to exclude certain files and folders or to erase search results on their own.

NHN¡¯s CEO Chae said, ¡°My PC Search is the first of its kind in Korea and is comparable to those of other overseas portals in terms of function and efficiency. We¡¯ll exert efforts to improve convenience of our customers with the application of cutting-edge search technologies.¡±

The desktop search, perceived as the next generation search method, has been provided by overseas portals such as Google, Yahoo and MSN. However, as Naver enters the market, the Korea¡¯s domestic desktop search market is expected to expand.
